Being Congruent

Anchored on Carl Rogers’ theory on the person-centered approach of understanding behavior and applying such an understanding to the â€Å"healing† process, the concept of congruence is among the highlights of this renowned theorist’s perspective. It is understood as a concept which usually starts or initiated by the therapist or practitioner and modelled to the client whereby the former displays more of the real person that he/she is and reducing denial of the real struggles or feelings that tend to be kept inside (Smith, 1997; Rogers, 1951).In the process, the client learns to unveil the real self rather than assume a facade which not only masks the real problems, make the therapeutic relationship increasingly difficult (Rogers, 1959). Rogers probably in his long years of exposure to different clients or patients, found commonality in his interactions that help facilitate better recovery and congruence as modelled by a therapist eventually gained its place in hi s approach. My list (Roman numeral #I) reflects specifically what I am like and readily present a sketch on my person. There are obvious similarities and the differences are there as well.I have many characteristics that I wish I have such as what I had just enumerated in the second set of list (II). The reason that there are differences especially the yearning on my part, for instance, to be â€Å"less temperamental† spring from the fact that because I am too tired from being dedicated and serious which are manifested in the works I do, I tend to be short-tempered or easily get irritated. In order for this to be attained, the legitimate need to be less serious or work-aholic and have more fun then, is easily understood or acceptable. This actually portrays a healthy tug of being real and aspiring to be more real to others in more ways than I am at present. Sufficient to say, basing on the idealization of the self by Rogers, I appear to be a congruent person because I gain mor e insights of who I am. IV. Include an action point that provides details on how you will strive for more congruency between your actual and ideal self. Action Point: There are some â€Å"steps† that had been coined by Rogers to put the theory in â€Å"action, so to speak. To elaborate, the following are some of the most important things that I will be doing or implementing for a targeted schedule.– Step 1: I will examine my values; what I cherish and make me thrills are among the things that are found under this step. – Step 2: Start to honour the values that I know are my treasures. – Step 3: I would probably pay attention to my body – such as my physical reaction to the things I don’t want to do but was just forced to do because of what people might think – increases incongruence. Every time I do this, I begin to enhance and increase my ability to say no, or being real especially. Sensing the inner peace and – Step 4.As muc h as possible, I will start to remove or minimize encounters or activities leading to incongruence. The more I listen to the inner prodding that the most important things are given priority, and this vantage point becomes a pathway within the person to experience more confidence in expressing the real issues inside of him. The more I check whether what my actions are, no matter how seemingly trivial they may be, the more I’d realize whether the discrepancies do exist and there are perhaps few improvements to narrow the dividing line. This results to being a contented person, able to fully accept inner failings and realizing that people eventually tend to follow suit. The Theory of Plato’s Ideas

Does Plato Believe There can ever be a Just Society In answering this question I first need to describe what a just society would consist of. A perfect state can only be lead under perfect conditions. Civil Society would be a better name for this state. A just state would be made up of three parts. First, a state is a structure with parts that work together like an organism. If the parts do not work well together then the whole thing breaks down. It must have virtues, voices, it can be wise and brave. The state must have everyone performing there jobs to their best ability. For a state to be just the people within the state must also be just. A man is just when he has a well ordered soul because then you will do the right thing by performing good and just actions. A soul must be allowed to perform its proper function. In a state you cannot define justice by a man because a man can decay into ugliness. Instead you must define justice based on forms. Plato says that the forms are eternal and ever lasting. What constitutes an unjust society is a lack of knowledge. So ignored to create a just society we must educate people. The society must be well rounded in their education for if they are not they will have problems in society. A society must be fit, participation in athletics, they need to be sensitive to prose poetry, and have knowledge of mathematics and science. Education can not be on specialties, but everything mind, spirit, and body. Having a well rounded education will help people to communicate in all areas. The more you know in many different areas the better over all communication a society has. One of the reason there are inequalities in a society is due to lack of knowledge. Everyone in the society must to some extent be a philosopher because they seek education and knowledge. A just society must also have a just ruler. A just ruler would need to be a philosopher, he would have to offer honest leadership which reflects the will and knowledge of society. A perfect society must have temperance, knowledge, and wisdom. In justices occur because of a lack of knowledge resulting in greed. In order to get rid of injustice everyone in the society must be educated starting at birth. Women and men need to be equally educated in a well rounded fashion in order to promote a just society. In asking if this society could ever work the answer is no. The only way it could work is if all of society is willing to accept knowledge and work hard for education. Even though there is no such thing as a truly unjust society a totally just society will never happen until people are willing to work for it. Another reason there can never be a perfectly just society is because everyone†s perception of just is different. We know that the idea of justice is there, but to explain it to where everyone agrees to the idea would be hard to achieve. However, in trying to find true justice the society becomes stronger and more just. Expressing individuality that benefits or hurts a society however, reflects assertiveness, incentive, thought, and creativity, which strengthens the society. If a society ever got to the point of being just, the society would no longer have greed, drive for a better life, it would not have poverty or wealth. The society would just stop. There would be no more invention, growth, or change. The only change from Plato†s time to ours is technology. We are still searching for the perfect government, the question of who is better than who is still asked, and education is still a major principle to whether or not you are successful.

Migrants from Asia and the Middle East Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Migrants from Asia and the Middle East - Essay Example The book reads like a story of a society determined to rise out of the dredges of the disadvantages of diversity so as to achieve unity in all its quarters as it strives to retain its right to be different. The material contains the all important implication that understanding different lifestyles and ways of living gives people a broader perspective in their own lives - this thought can be called a summation of all the ideas in this book. Strangers to these Shores goes on to give an insight into various communities and so called minorities who have the potential to deliver us to unknown lands and their unknown cultures. The United States of America has a salad bowl for its cultural and social structure, owing to the fact that it is basically made up of immigrants pursuing the "Great American Dream". These immigrants fall into a variety of groups and minorities struggling to keep their basic identity intact and yet, contribute to the American mosaic of cultures and minorities. When on the discussion of minorities, it would be incomplete without a mention of Asian and Middle Eastern Immigrants. This group has emerged as on of the largest and most sizable immigrants to the United States of America. According to national figures and statistics, every fourth person in New York alone belongs to India or some country around it. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to find an entire chapter dedicated to this group. Chapter nine of Strangers to these Shores is called "Other Asian and Middle Eastern Americans". The paper in your hand is a summary of this chapter. Firstly, let us deal with the word "other". The use of this word in the chapter's title silently underscores the fact that this group has been relegated to the minority status. Moving on, it would be imperative to define "Asia" and the "Middle East", out of a need to distinguish between the two. While Asia widely refers to Middle Eastern states as well as countries like India, Pakistan, China, Japan and other South East Asian states, it is quite clear that the cultures are poles apart. A notable factor of this chapter that has to do with the broad definitions of these areas is the fact that it takes the Middle East and the rest of Asia i.e. when it says "other Asian immigrants", separately. That should suffice as a clear demarcation for the rest of the paper. In the course of this paper, the author seeks to educate the readers by starting out with facts that have to do with understanding the topical and current nature of the experiences of these people as compared to their black and other European counterparts. Since most of these peoples found themselves migrating to the United States since the 1965 Immigration Act, their basic trait is that they are comparatively unusual and still very "non - Western". Further, while many have been able to achieve a respectable social status, a majority of them have minimal participation with native-born U.S. residents owing to their cultural differences. These differences, like those of the groups who have come to settle down in America way before them, will be resolved only over time - i.e., when

Teen Pregnancy among the Hispanics in US Research Paper

Teen Pregnancy among the Hispanics in US - Research Paper Example The findings of these studies also validate the author’s claim that the most widespread health related problem for the US is â€Å"teenage pregnancy†, a major point of which is Hispanics (Curley, 2012, p. 230). The author further contends that teenagers who become pregnant are unlikely to complete their high school or college education and, on most occasions, they drop out, and this problem is clearly stated and supported by evidence from other studies. Basch further delineates the repercussions of the problem in terms of failure to attain academic accomplishments and considerable aggravation of economic stability. He also identifies clinical problems related to teen pregnancy, which are evident from the fact that â€Å"children who are born to teen mothers also experience a wide range of problems† (â€Å"Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion†, 2011, para.4) like chronic health conditions and behavioral problems. The author specifically narrows d own his claims that economic and social costs of teen pregnancy are often high among Hispanic groups, and these costs may be both immediate and recurring for teen parents and their children. This claim is further substantiated through another study, which purports that the rising problem of teen pregnancy contributes significantly to â€Å"drop-out rates among high school girls† (â€Å"Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion†, 2011, para.5). Teen pregnancy and childbirth cost for the US taxpayers was estimated to be â€Å"$9 billion per year† (â€Å"Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion†, 2011, para.8) due to enlarged health and foster care cost, enlarged internment rates among the teen parent’s children, and missing tax returns from the teen mothers who receive less money as they have less education. The author also establishes the significance of the study by stating that non-marital teen births in the US affect the educational, economic, social and health aspects of such teenagers and their children. Purpose and Research Questions The author has clearly stated the objective of the study and also delineated the pervasiveness of teen pregnancy among school-aged Hispanic youth, underlying pathways through which the pre-marital teen births negatively affect educational achievement. Though the author does not put the questions explicitly in the study, it serves the purpose as the questions are related to the problem. The qualitative methods of analysis are suitable to answer the research questions as the author has reviewed the articles of several prominent authors. Literature Review The author has conducted an exhaustive and accurate analysis of this problem prevalent among the Hispanics in the US. He claims that teen pregnancy and birth rates of this race are considered to higher than in any other community and it â€Å"exerts an important influence on [their] educational attainment† (Basch, 2011, p.6 14). As a result of this, they drop out from schools, and this adversely affects their education and knowledge attainment and pushes them to the lower strata.

Photorealism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Photorealism - Essay Example Through photorealism, the use of sketches as the primary means of gathering information has been replaced with photography, with the photograph being the subject of the painting. Through this process, photorealism complicates the notion of realism by mixing the together the real and the unreal, making their canvas painting of the image look exactly as if they were made from actual observation. The author takes note of how Eddy, got fascinated by the double layer of information offered by the features of window panes, that of being reflective and at the same time transparent. While it was apparent that any ordinary painter would eliminate the reflective property of the window as being insignificant or worse still confusing in the resulting painting, the author points that Eddy found the apparent confusion as the major intriguing factor, thus worth maintaining in the painting. The resulting artwork also exposes the ability of photography to capture the dizzying amount of information that can, later on, be analyzed for magnificent effects that in the words of the author, some sort of hallucinatory super realism. The author also explores another parallel development to photorealism typical of the works of Duane Hanson, a type of realism based on sculptors. Hanson’s photorealism substituted casting from a live model, thereby molding artworks directly on the body of an individual, as opposed to the substitution of photography for traditional sketching, characterized by modeling in clay, plaster or wax.

The challenge of differentiation and integration Assignment

The challenge of differentiation and integration - Assignment Example It is a formidable challenge in most organizations. This paper looks at the challenge of differentiation with specific reference to Google. Founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, Google has grown to become a big company with over 12,000 employees. Google operates an intricate network of activities in various locations globally. It has established offices in various locations including in states such as California, Illinois, New York, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Washington, DC, Oregon, Michigan and South Carolina. Google has also established various international offices in locations such as the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia. As such, differentiation and integration becomes an imperative challenge to Google. Differentiation refers to the process by which an organization separates itself into various key components (Lawrence, and Lorsch 3). It is a common phenomenon among large organizations. Consequently, as an organization grows larger and expands its activities further, the more differentiated it becomes. Be that as it may, as an organization becomes more differentiated, the various components become more independent as they are conferred with a great deal of autonomy. Therefore, the business culture of such an organization may significantly differ as you move from one component to another. Differentiation is usually done based on varied premises. For example, an organization may decide to differentiate basing on the tasks or on the product offering. In this regards, an organization may opt to divide into departments that produce a given product and establish finance and marketing department for each of the differentiated product. Google has been differentiated into different departments including Information Technology, Engineering, Support, People Operations, Knowledge, Advertising, Technical Infrastructure, Mobile and Digital

Spanish Golden Age Essay Example for Free

Spanish Golden Age Essay The Spanish Golden Age:In the context 1474 to 1598, to what extent did Ferdinand and Isabella lay the foundations for a Spanish Golden Age? By the end of the 16th century Spain had within the space of 100 year risen to become the greatest power in Europe and as quickly and dramatically as it had risen out of a divided peninsular it came crashing down back into despair. By the end of Philip II reign the country had been become bankrupt several times due to excessive spending through his reign, and as Woodward states here was ‘ plague, famine, depopulation, inflation'(1) But regardless of what happened at the end the time before hand had been called the Spanish Golden Age where Spain had a vast empire stretching along the Mediterranean all the way the vastness of the New World and the Americas and power and wealth beyond the belief of any of the other european powers. However all of this would not of been possible if not down to the work of Ferdinand(F)and Isabella(I) or the Catholic Monarchs as they came to be known and if they really did lay the foundations of a Golden Age for Spain. 1479 the year by when both Ferdinand and Isabella had become the king and queen of their realms, Aragon and Castille is what Spain was known at this time, Spain as a whole country did not exists until during Phillips reign however the pre marriage agreement of F and I was that they would rule their kingdoms jointly and any acts or policies that could be put forward would be in place for both Aragon and Castille. At the time of their succession to their thrones neither kingdom was in a tate to deal with anything beyond their own borders, the main problem was that both governments were different styles of ruling, Aragon(A) was a more federal style of government where there were 3 separate Cortes all with which F had to deal with and could not make any decisions without whereas in Castilee (C) I the Cortes had little to no power over how she would rule her country without any restraints. Now after a long succession battle after the death of the previous monarch of C the nobility had began to resist I and so he setting up of the Hermandades helped secure peace in her territory by 1498 and had significantly reduced the power of the nobility and was continually reduced throughout Is reign with the set up of Consejo Real and corregiadors who helped secured the loyalty of the classes straight to the royalty. According to Kamen at the start of their reigns F and I actually were looking for the support of the nobles and in his book he states that lavish gifts were give to those who suported them and just as equally harsh measures against those who did not(2). It was only as their reign progressed that new policies were brought about that were intended to reduce the nobles power. The reducing of the power of the nobles and the centralising of the governments that allowed a unified Spain to come about during Charles V reign. Economically the Spain was in very bad shape by the time of F and I and had to be turned around quickly if Spain was to flouish. In C seeing as I did not call the Cortes between 1483-1497 she needed income from elsewhere and this was done in the form of taxes

Silas Marner Essay Example for Free

Silas Marner Essay In the book Silas marner, George Elliot uses many themes to bring the book alive and also to grasp the reader’s attention. Silas marner is written by a woman who named herself George Elliot as a mean to publish her novels. Themes are used in this novel to portray what George Elliot was trying to show the readers. One of the themes in Silas marner is class; being centered on two households, marner’s cottage by the stone pit and the Cass marner, the red house, these two settings represent class extremes. The cottage is showed as the ramshackle abode of the lowest member of raveloe society; the manor is a beautiful home filled with gentry and a location for dances. Elliot shows many intersections between the two households. Dunstan Cass, who is a member of the upper class, enters marner’s home looking for money. Silas marner who is from the lowest class and miserable, raises a squire’s granddaughter as his own child, despise the fact that she is from an upper class family. The rainbow tavern and the church in raveloe are also places where class differences are present. The rainbow is a different place when the â€Å"gentles† are having a dance (ch. six). In these times, the lesser villagers like mr. Macey, reign over the rainbow, telling stories. Secondly, at the church, the higher members of society sit in assigned seats at the front of the church while the rest of the villagers sit in the back and watch. In both these places, although everyone recognizes the status differences between the lower and higher class, this doesn’t not seem to be a problem in raveloe. In raveloe, strict boundaries of class do not necessarily lead to greater happiness among the higher classes. Those with money or those who have a little money tend to be the most harned and corrupt characters, such as Dunstan, Godfrey and even silas, before he found Eppie. The person in silas Marner who is most oppressed by circumstances, is Godfrey Cass, who finds himself at the mercy of a lower class wife, who fails to have children of his own and ends up envying the bond of a lowly weaver and his daughter. Silas and Eppie, on the other hand, though they do not have status or wealth, seem to enjoy unmitigated happiness. Nevertheless, being in a higher class shows that when there is a crime or something goes amiss you are never suspected because you are in a higher class so you would never stoop to those standards. For example, when silas’s gold was stolen, even though it was Dunstan Cass who was from the higher class who stole it, he was never suspected because he was in a higher class. Instead they suspected Jem Rodney, a low class peddler. Why did they suspect him and not someone from a higher class? Because being in a higher class, no one ever thinks you would do something like steal from a miser. Only because the higher class portrays an image as to having it all and are happy and perfect. Dunstan Cass is a clear example that even though you are in a higher class, you have that one person who does not uphold the standards and stoop lower than a lower class person would. Another theme of silas Marner is the nature of chance, and perhaps the only inference one can make about chance as read in the novel is that chance cannot be trusted. Everyone has good or bad turns but we never know which is which until later in life. Take into consideration when silas loses his gold, he thinks it is the worst thing that could ever happen to him. When you think about this, you realize it was one of the best things to happen to silas because losing his gold gave him a clear space in his life to love and take care of Eppie like she was his own. Looking at godfrey cass, he believes the death of his first wife and marner’s subsequent adoption of his daughter, was an amazing stroke of good fortune, but as we read and realized it turns out to be horribly the worst in the end. He ends up wanting his daughter Eppie in his life more than he wanted Nancy. Godfrey realizes it was wrong to pretend that Eppie was not his child, which he paid for in the end. We realize that chance is not so random after all but guided by the author. The characters end up meeting their faith, the good were rewarded or ended up lucky, while the bad were unlucky or punished. For instance Godfrey stated that he â€Å"passed for childless once† because he wanted to and, unfortunately, he â€Å"shall pass for childless now against his wish†. Even so, the novel also reflects the complexity of reality, and chance serves this purpose as well. Near the book’s end, the wise Marner says, despite his perfect happiness, â€Å"Things will change, whether we like it or not; things won’t go on for a long while just as they are and no difference†. Which means pain will come, joy will come, and no one can learn from each revolution of the wheel fortune.

Challenges of Health Promotion

Challenges of Health Promotion There is a very diverse range of the meaning of health between different groups of people. How a person will define what health means to them will depend on a number of factors. Arguably the most influential of these factors are; age, sex, socio-economic status, social class, location and culture. It is now recognised that there are 5 distinct dimensions of health; physical, emotional, spiritual, social and mental. The World Health Organisation (1948) defined health as as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Kelleher (1991) says that for some people being healthy means being happy, for others it may be an expectation of living for a long time, while others may see it as an exclusion of illness. These definitions of health may be influenced by personal experience of illness, however some may see it as simply just being able to cope and go about their daily lives without interference. Generally the most dominant definition of health is merely seen as an absence of illness, often described as a negative definition. Downie et al (1990) say that negative definitions of health can be linked to perceptions of what is abnormal, unwanted or incapacitating. Age is a very important factor in determining how someone defines health, as those of a younger age group will mainly focus on the physical aspects of health such as fitness and diet. Generally however, as people age they place more emphasis on the emotional and spiritual aspects of health. This shows that social factors are a very big determinant of how someone will define health. A lot of podiatry work involves working with various people to improve their health for example keeping them mobile and alleviate painful symptoms due to some form of fraility, illness or disability. This may include short term treatments or long term care may be required. The definition of health has also changed over time, for example the Ancient Greeks believed that illness was caused by an imbalance in the humours (bodily fluids). In contrast in Victorian times, illness was seen as the will of God, a more spiritual take on the concept of health. There are three models relating to the concept of health; the Biomedical model emphasises health in terms of biological processes of the body. In contrast the Social model of health asserts that in addition to physical dimensions of health, other dimensions must be considered including the persons social and economic circumstances. It considered the person as a whole living within a social context (Blaxter 2004). The Biopsychosocial model takes the aspects of the previous two models and combines them. It is the dynamic interaction of biological, psychological, and social influences of health, however it focuses more on the individual rather than the social structures surrounding them. In the 1800s and 1900s the focus was on the provision of a healthy environment which included adequate housing and sanitation and the provision of safe food and water. With developments in medical science the emphasis has shifted to preventative medical services e.g. vaccines, immunisation and encouraging people to make healthy choices. This reflects the shift from communical diseases to lifestyle related diseases e.g. cancer. There are two approaches to health promotion: a preventative approach and an empowerment approach. Glanz, Rimer Lewis (2002) assert that the central concern of health education is health behaviour. This means that peoples lifestyles play a significant role in the development and management of disease and through various measures we can encourage people to make healthy choices. In 1975 Marc Lalonde published a report entitled A New Perspective on the Health of Canadians in which he argued there are 4 main causes of illness, namely: Inadequacies in current health services, lifestyle or behavioural factors, environmental pollution and physical characteristics. The Ottawa Charter (1986) outlines the five principal elements of health promotion as; Conducive public policy, supportive environments, community participation, personal skills and the reorientation of health services to allow people to make well informed, healthy choices. Conducive policy refers to the importance of Government policy in general, and not just in health policy, in promoting health. The second element is the provision of supportive environments. This refers to the importance of having healthy physical environments such as in the home, at school, work and in public places. The community participation element of health promotion consists of involving communities and special interest groups, e.g. the elderly, women, people with disabilities and travellers, in identifying their own health needs and developing services appropriate to these needs. The final element of health promotion is the reorientation of health services towards services which are concerned with health promotion, protection and disease prevention. This involves shifting the emphasis in health services to primary health care e.g. providing screening services and health checks within a community. Ewles and Simnett (1999) list the following activities that could be seen as health promotion practices; Mass media advertising, campaigns on health issues, patient education, self-help groups environmental safety measures, public policy issues, health education about physical health, preventative medical procedures, codes of practice on health issues, health enhancing facilities in local communities, workplace health policies and health and social education for young people in schools. Ewles and Simnett (2003) also identify approaches to health promotion. These all flow from a particular set of aims which hope to be achieved. They emphasise that no one aim or approach to health promotion is right but that it is important for us, as health care workers to consider which is appropriate for us, and relevant to our work. However one of the most important factors is educating people, to allow them to make informed, healthy choices. The first of approaches is medical or preventitive. The aim of this approach is to gain freedom from medically defined disease and disability e.g. cancer. This could be achieved through screening, immunisation and early detection. This approach has been highly successful but tends to reinforce a negative definition of health.

Effects of Media on Children and Adolescents Essays -- media influence

1. Character merchandising will be processed by children at the peripheral level, aka heuristic persuasion processing, as it is a message that relies heavily on emotional attachment and source attractiveness. These appeals rely on moderate levels of consumer attention and low motivation to process the message. The persuasive message is not presented in a rational argument the consumer must cognitively analyze but rather it is presented through an attractive character that children either know or can easily attach to that is aimed at generating a positive emotional association with the brand. Product placement will be processed at the automatic level, aka automatic persuasion processing, because consumers are generally unaware that they are being targeted by a persuasive message. The brand is integrated seamlessly into media content so that children do not know it is placed their intentionally as a marketing strategy. The implicit nature of product placement relies on the consumer to devote no explicit attention to the advertised brand and rather make a subconscious positive association. Children exposed to product placement do not need to be motivated or cognitively able to process the message as it is designed for implicit brand memory. 2. Rozendaal et al. emphasize the crucial difference between conceptual knowledge of advertising and attitudinal knowledge. The study showed that being conceptually literate (recognizing and understanding an advertising message) does not increase advertising defenses in children. The History Of The Olympic Games :: Expository Essays Research Papers

The History Of The Olympic Games Introduction Today, the Olympic Games are the world's largest pageant of athletic skill and competitive spirit. They are also displays of nationalism, commerce and politics. Well-known throughout the world the games have been used to promote understanding and friendship among nations, but have also been a hotbed of political disputes and boycotts. The Olympic games started thousands of years ago and lasted over a millennium.. The symbolic power of the Games lived on after their demise, and came to life again as the modern Olympic Games being revived in the last century. Both the modern and Ancient Olympics have close similarities in there purpose and in there problems. Ancient Olympics The ancient Olympics had some differences from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Women where not allowed to even watch the games on penalty of death let alone play in them.. Also, the games were always held at Olympia in Greece instead of being moved around to different sites every time. But also they had some similarities to our modern Olympics, winning athletes were heroes who put their home towns on the map, and became financially sound for life. The conflict between the Olympic's ideals of sportsmanship and unity and the commercialism and political acts which accompany the Games where also present in ancient times. "Sotades at the ninety-ninth Festival was victorious in the long race and proclaimed a Cretan, as in fact he was. But at the next Festival he made himself an Ephesian, being bribed to do so by the Ephesian people. For this act he was banished by the Cretans. " The first Olympic games at Olympia were held in 776 BC. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, the only event held at the first Olympics was the stadion footrace. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states Greece. Every four years the games where started on the first full moon after the summer solstice, lasting for five days. For over 1100 years, from 776 BC to 393 AD the games where played, thousands of people ceased all warfare and flocked to a small sanctuary in northwestern Greece for five days in the late summer for a single reason, to witness the Olympic Games.

Living the American Dream: Of Mice and Men Essay

What is the American Dream? There are a myriad of aspects to it, but one general idea: the ideal life. It is making a lot of money, being respected, and triumphing difficult situations. In the book Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, Lennie and George’s dream is to live on a ranch of their own. But through these difficult times will their hard work pay off? In his novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck highlights Lennie, Crooks and Carlyss wife to demonstrate that many pursue the American Dream, but only a few succeed. Through out the novel Lennie had many little dreams. Their perfect world is one of independence. Workers like Lennie and George have no family, no home, and very little control over their lives; they only have what they carry. This gives them motivation to work and make money to go towards their dream. â€Å"‘Well,’ said George, ‘we’ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an’ listen to the rain comin’ down on the roof†¦'†(Steinbeck 14). Lennie has a dream before he even reaches the new ranch, he wants to tend the rabbits â€Å"an’ live of the fatta the lan’† (Steinbeck 14). He wants to be able to do what he loves to do. Will Lennie complete his dream? In the novel Of Mice and Men, Crooks similar to Lennie has many dreams. Crooks is very separated from the other men because of his race; they don’t converse or spend time with one and other. He feels very alone, he once said,† ‘Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, all of y ou stink to me.†(Steinbeck 68). Crooks dream is to be accepted and equal with the other men on the ranch. Just because he is only one of the black men in town he believes he should be treated the same way, he should be playing cards and going out with them. Crooks also wants to join Lennie and Candy in their dream at the new ranch, â€Å"†¦If you†¦guys would want a hand to work for nothing-just his keep, why I’d come and lend a hand†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Steinbeck 76). Crooks wanted to join them so he wouldn’t be alone. Will he ever be accepted and accomplish his dream? Curley’s wife has a dream that although different in detail from the other’s dreams, is still very similar in its general desires. Curley’s wife is very unsatisfied by Curly; she consistently hangs around the barn, trying to engage in other workers conversations. She wants companionship; she is so helpless she will talk to the men on the ranch that doesn’t like her. She also has a dream like the other me n on the ranch; she wanted to be an actress in Hollywood. She imagines how great it would be to stay in nice hotels, own lots of beautiful clothes, and have people want to take her photograph (Steinbeck 89). Both attention and financial security would have been hers. Like the men she desires friendship, and also material comforts, though the specifics of her dream differ from theirs. Will she ever achieve her dream? Many pursue the American Dream, but only a few succeed. In this novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck created many dreams for Lennie, Crooks, and Curley’s wife but none of them succeed. Lennie died he was shot by George, crooks bfjdlsfs, and Lennie killed Curley’s wife. Thought out the story these characters saw hope and they tried to catch it but they were not successful. Everyone dreams of the American Dream. Works Cited: Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men. New York: Penguin Group, 1937

Emotional intelligence operation is the set of skills that underlie the accurate assessment, evaluation, expression, and convention of emotions (Feldman, 2013, p. 385). The difference between the two is that hard-nosed intelligence is learned by detect peoples behaviors charm horny intelligence has to do encephalonh understanding early(a)s emotions.Emotional intelligence is the basis of empathy for self-aw areness and fond skills (Feldman, 2013, p. 385). These both wad dish up you chance upon many things, especially if you are pricy with both. These both disregard help you sincerely well when working. Just imagine you are a cashier register and a client complains about a soup-strainer by yelling and calling you icky names. If you are rattling heavy at both inte lligences then you give notice carry off with this in a allay and uprise way. Ask the customer what is wrong with the toothbrush, if the customer keeps shouting at you then you hunch forward that you need to crush the manager. If you have a low intelligence for both steamy and functional intelligence then you can endure fired because you will kickoff acting like the customer. Emotional intelligence can help in this status by helping you understand what the psyche is really feeling by their carcass language, words and facial expressions. It can as well help you by knowing how to calm down the customer enough so nothing bad happens by sense of hearing to what the customer says and talking in a calm and mature way. Practical intelligence can help because you will be good at observing the mortals behavior. If you are good at tho one of these it may help solely not as good as both would. You may get too compassionate if you are only emotionally intelligent because you will really feel sad because of what the customer is waiver through. If you are both though, then you can speak up about it more critically using practicable intelligence. One telecasting personality that I can think of that uses both intelligences is Bugs Bunny. He is always analyse peoples behaviors to see how he can get out of trouble. He to a fault knows how to get to your heart to get out of trouble. Such as with his rival Elmer Fudd who tries to cook him in a propagate of episodes. He is competent to draw him cry by telling him stories that he knows will make him sad. He also dresses up as other people so that he can get out of trouble. With his wit I believe he can get out of any situation. His practical intelligence and emotional intelligence is slowly to see through every episode. another(prenominal) character is Dr. House who plays in the give House. He is able to tell if someone is lying to him by looking at their body language and behavior. He is also very smart and is actually able to diagnose a room in effect(p) of patients in a minute while walking out of the clinic. He only did this to test people that he can do it. Although he is good at practical and emotional intelligence, he can be mean. He usually acts like he does not care about his patients, but he just does that because he does not like to show his emotions. Critics have called his character sociopathic because of this. Other than his flaws he is really smart and intelligent. The only problem he needs to work on is his affable skills. Resource Feldman, R. S. They should hold ends with them. They should overly tack on create verbally information about the benefits of action mechanism and the local chances to be active. They should follow them up at trance intervals over a 3 to 6 month period of time. skeleton intercessions dupe move the intercession of pick for many wellness advancement runs ( 18 ) and are by and magnanimous establish upon the trans notional, or phases of allowance, abstractive grievance of behavioral fitting and, on occasion, the scheme of self- stopping point ( 49 ) . The trans suppositional conjectural level was first off proposed by Prochaska and DiClemente in 1982 ( 50 ) , taking recital of concepts from several theories from the field of mental science, such as the scheme of well-grounded action ( 51 ) , and surmise of think behavior ( 52 ) . Sniehotta suggests that dapple these theories advanced leash of fountain with respect to conduct readjustment they do small part to the scientific discipline of behavior transmutation because they did non include a agencies for modify behavior or did non chronicle for non-motivational behavior vicissitude techniques ( 53 ) . The take a crap of phases of transmutation emerged during investigate into the procedures that persons use to alter their troubled behavior ( 50 ) but the theoretical account has since been successfully used for many wellness behaviors change intercessions, including hatful ( 54, 55 ) , intoxicantic ( 56, 57 ) , dietetic ( 58 ) , every irregular good as strong-arm natural action ( 49 ) .A new- do critical review indicated that motivational discourseing, base upon a stages of rewrite theoretical account, efficaciously helps guests to positively alter their behavior and exceeded results of advice except intercessions in 80 % of the surveies include in the review ( 59 ) . The writers of the followup farther suggest that, although some qualifyings may non be clinically importeeant, it was of import to defy in head that the procedure is based upon doing the patients alive(predicate) of the dominance for behavior rescript turn up in improve wellness results and that the myopic adjustments made within the period of heap may besides be of hanker verge involvement if they mark the informant of a languish term procedure of renewing for the person ( 59 ) .The Lets ticktock wretched attack is a conduct alteration intercession that has been knowing to supply a arrogant attack to placing and back uping grownups who are non run intoing the genuine recommendations for corporal natural action to go more active ( 8 ) . The attack is based upon beautiful frequent wellness guidance ( 1 ) , which endorses the practice session of abbreviated intercessions for sensible activity forwarding in radical care as world both clinically and be efficient in the long term. The programme draws upon motivational doubting techniques to highlight the wellness benefits of personal activity, working through cardinal behaviors alteration phases and think with a clear personal activity end, which is set by the person, and the denomination of worthy local chances to be active, including employment referral, if allot ( 8 ) . motivational interviewing is a patient centred attack, which fits in with the watercourse administration mantra No determination about me, without me . The procedure aims to birth and squall up an persons inalienable motivating to alter life style behaviors ( 8 ) an d has been used by a sorting of health care professionals, across a stretch of special feather tutelage scenes, to baffle better wellness results ( 60 ) . The active constituents of motivational interviewing are change magnitude prep to alter, utilizing empathetic audience techniques, increase self-efficacy and change magnitude the sensed variety amongst existent and angel behavior ( 61 ) . A fresh review article has shown that motivational interviewing in primeval solicitude can hold a positive resolution on a scope of wellness behaviors, including diet and somatic activity ( 62 ) .The shit of motivational doubting evolved from the learn of handling alcohol addiction, and was maiden set forth by moth miller in 1983 ( 63 ) . This grassroots visualize was developed into a luculent theory, and a distend description of the clinical process was provided by moth miller and Rollnick ( 64 ) , who be motivational interviewing as a directive, invitee cent red focussing room for arousing behaviour alteration by assisting customers to interrogation and take root ambivalency . The schemes of motivational interviewing are more convincing than coercive, more supportive than argumentative, and the boilers suit end is to increase the client s immanent motive so that alteration arises from within or else than being oblige from without ( 65 ) . The motivational interviewing trend is a cooperative method utilizing distinguishable rules and techniques, while utilizing client centred techniques to construct trust and cut down opposition, the supplier focuses directively on increase set for alteration ( 61 ) .Reappraisals of sensual activity intercessions have determine the scene of general pattern as a potentially good scene for population degree of physical activity promotional material schemes ( 66, 67 ) . A indite prescription drug treat is a acquainted(predicate) means for patients to have advice from their GP, com monly in the manikin of medicine ( 68 ) , and research has shown that furnish patients with a write prescription to take more practice session has been effectual, at least in the short term ( 6 to 10 hebdomads ) ( 69-71 ) . However causal agent suggests that long term auxiliary to exert programmes may adopt sevenfold contacts with the wellness professional and that GP s, in peculiar, have convey strike about deficiency of clip, effrontery or skill to stand for independently well-kept exercising advice ( 68 ) . It is suggested that one manner of get the better ofing these barriers is for other affiliate wellness professionals to supply the shortened intercession chase appointment of suited campaigners by the GP or pattern apply ( 66, 69, 72 ) utilizing a validate tool, such as GPPAQ, to time current activity degrees ( 1 ) . This is the attack proposed in this scheme, using affiliate wellness workers, such as wellness trainers, for illustration, distinguishly s kilful to present the initial shortened intercession and motivational interview audiences, following on from the referral by the healthcare professional, each at the GP pattern or in a separate location.Promoting physical activity in primary perplexity is recognised as an of import and potentially effectual attack for increase population degrees of physical activity ( 1, 73, 74 ) . With consort attacks being tried over novel old ages, including large advice or guidance ( 75, 76 ) , supplying write resources ( advice brochures etc. ) ( 71 ) and exercise referral programmes ( 1, 77 ) . There is an increase sum of ground for the impact of wellness professionals promoting physical activity within primary attention ( 78 ) . A late(a) Australian accompany suggests that besides ternion to five proceedingss of shortened advice from a ordinary Practitioner, support with suspend written stuffs, could take to an profit in the harmonise of patients run intoing recommended degree s of physical activity 24 hebdomads after the intercession ( 68 ) . also a pile on the do of iii legal brief intercession and reding attacks conducted by pattern nurses on patients with hazard factors associating to cardiovascular disease besides showed a eventful addition in describe activity degrees quaternity months after the intercession ( 75 ) . In 2009 the Department for Health launched the Be Active, Be robust policy which proposed the phased breathing of the Lets abbreviate traveling programme, and the new authorities public wellness white radical ( 39 ) endorses the programme within the new public wellness construction.DecisionBehaviour alteration intercessions are by and large seen as one of the most purloin attack to increase population degrees of physical activity and, among these, brief intercessions appear to be a customary pick among wellness advancement staff. Evidence suggests that the add-on of motivational interview techniques to the intercession has served to increase the effectivity of these intercessions in a mixing of wellness promotional material scenes. The customs of the Lets get hold of change of location protocol for change magnitude activity degrees has been tried and tested and found to be both clinically and be effectual in a primary attention scene and is hence seen to be an appropriate attack to utilize for this scheme. This attack was endorsed by the old wear down authorities and this support has been re-iterated by the live Lib Dem/ mercenary conglutination authorities in the latest public wellness white make-up and back uping paperss.
